A year ago, hearing about online marketing brought up thoughts that now seem a bit off. People make money at home? That’s nuts! No boss, no workers and no salary cap? I thought, show me how! For most of us, internet marketing was too nontraditional to grasp. Our parents never brought us up to make money from home. The schools never taught us to go to university, learn marketing, then sit behind a computer and make money online. It is an unbelievable type of living that not many are ever taught.

But now, our email is filled with sales pitches to super gurus’ videos with fast cars, mansions and of course the tale of living in their cars until a friend of theirs shared...you name it. You know what I mean. The trick to successful marketing must be that we should work for a software company, look for a group of young people with expensive cars or hang out in parking garages until a guy in a trench coat offers us never before seen software code. Then we can offer the software program to everyone for a price. That’s not internet marketing and buying the software is not a winning strategy.

The first step to internet marketing success is to stop looking for the easy money everywhere. All that will be found are distractions, free ebooks you’ll file away and rabbit trails to nowhere. What is needed is a road map of the dirt trails that get you to affiliate marketing success. The gurus’ maps are outdated as they know this. Instead of trying to get you to buy outdated maps, you get offers for magic one click software that guarantees wealth tomorrow. You now know that it doesn’t work like that.

Here’s a strategy that has been applied since the beginning of time. Stop and take a few minutes and think about your passions. Write down 10 items that you have bought and what made you choose it. Also jot down special skills you are good at whether it is health issues, welding or ancestry. Next search the affiliate networks and keyword databases to find products that are searched for. Let’s go old school and find an issue or ailment that a lot of people share, then show them a solution, product or service to fill that need.

I also fell into the guru hype as everyone has. I followed for longer than I should have, pouring lots of money down the drain. Eventually I finally figured it out. The solution is not in the software, it’s figuring out the buyers’ wishes and services, then you fill the gap. Internet marketing is about getting the products to the customers with the a need. You as an affiliate marketer have the task of connecting them.

It’s time to come to reality and get with the basics in order to succeed in online marketing. Spend a moment to review the list that was made (or going to make) and pick out a product that fits with the desires. Then apply one of the multitude of keyword programs similar to Google Keyword Tool, to get the words people use in search engines. Finally apply those keywords to your chosen method or methods of marketing.

Usually the marketing method is set by your cash flow available. Chat rooms, articles and information sites are effective but take more work to convert. Pay Per Click, Adsense and paying for solos work well but at a cost that may be unaffordable to someone new to the business. The truth is that there are more ways than one to make money out there. However, good money will be loss if you keep falling for every software product offered. Nor will you succeed by reading or collecting all the free eBooks available. Now is the time to take action.
