Online Safety For Your Kids - Be Aware
It is inevitable that they will be online before you even know it. Actually it is good that they are learning or else in today's world they will be left behind, but you need to have that talk. Talking to them early puts the right things in their minds. As in going out in the public world there are rules you taught your child about what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior, like someone touching them is wrong. Well the same holds true in the cyber world. Make sure you communicate to your kid about the online world and how good it is but that there are also dangers out there to be aware of. Here are some dangers to be aware of: Inappropriate Content No matter how much parental control like filters or monitoring software you use some inappropriate content will get through. Have your child understand about those kind of content and have them report it to you right away. Between the ages of 8 to 12 you should be monitoring them closely but something may slip through and it is better that they be forewarned before it happens and knows what to do if it does. Inappropriate Conduct In the real world there are certain behaviors expected of everybody including your child and the same goes for the cyber world. Make sure your child knows that he has to be responsible for his or her actions and behavior online. Even from their computer they should never forget that they will be held responsible for everything they do. Actions can not be taken back. Inappropriate Contact Like in the public your child has learned that some people have bad intentions and are to be avoided. This same holds true for the online world. The cyber world can include bullies, predators, hackers, scammers and other bad elements out there to be aware of. Let your child understand that you care for them and their safety and that they can come to you with anything that seems questionable. Trust and honesty should be encouraged. Let them know you support them using the computer but they have to be on guard and to notify you of any inappropriate things. Your family values taught to your child is the same values that should be expected online. Talk to them and share with them things that are relevant to internet safety. Remember they are still young and may need to be reminded over and over again. Be patient with them. Constant supervision by you is the safest way for your child to be online but that is not realistic, especially as your child gets older. Educating yourself and starting early with educating them with your values and the facts of the online world is the best starting place. Don't rely it to the schools to do it for you.
