Online surveys are a powerful tool of change in the internet world. They change the way businesses formulate products, how their corporate policies around society evolve, and even how governments handle their business of running nations. This can be seen in the regular surveys for products and service that we are all familiar with, though the use of this tool is still not at its optimum. It can also be seen when certain special interest groups and social cause groups change the way corporations are run and their impact on the environment and social issues are formulated. They can even be seen in the way governments are sometimes forced to change fundamental policies and decisions from the results of online petitions.


We can therefore see that the span and reach of surveys is quite large. Narrowing it down to the aspect of business and trading, surveys can be quite a daunting exercise because of the statistical prowess that is required to understand the results of a survey. This does not mean that you have to spend days analyzing spreadsheets of data to understand what the customers want. In fact, this would be an indication of a badly made survey. All that you really need to is to focus on the objective of the survey and know exactly what kind of information you want from the customers.

The first way to use the results of online surveys is to improve your base and fundamental product line. There may be many issues that customers could have with your existing offering and not all of those needs can be captured in a feedback sheet. Therefore, the first way to use this mechanism is to find out what change in the existing service offering people would like to see.

The second part of using this tool to effect change is to survey people on what augmentation to the existing product line people would like to see. In many cases, marketing errors like not using a good combination of products can sometimes cause much distress to buyers. So, find out what more additions people would like the existing product line.

After this, it is up to your surveying skill to find out what the customers’ aspirations are from you as a vendor. This means new product lines and services. People always want a one-stop-shop option and will always like to add more to their existing vendor. Therefore, understand customer aspirations.

Reading all the data from your surveys is the last cog in this wheel. Remember that the questions that you ask should show clear results as to whether customers want either this or that. Try and avoid ambiguity in the results at all costs as this just ends up adding to the junk data that you will have discard. Also ensure that you sample sizes are well thought out and set in number so that you know which bunch of people want a specific change.
