Opening A Tanning Business - Advantages And Strategies

The concepts of artificial tanning, even tanning beds themselves, is not new. They came to the United States in 1979 from Europe, which seems to innovate a lot of these personal care trends. Since then, their popularity has only risen, as they have improved with brighter bulbs and faster tanning. The trend of growth and improvements in the industry is only expected to continue, because as ever, the public is obsessed with body image and beauty as they use tanning as one of the ways they strive for that perfect look.

Tanning salons are popular for several reasons. One is that there are benefits to using tanning salons rather than rely on the sun. Of course the sun is unreliable. If you lived in the Pacific Northwest you would spend a significant portion of the year as white as the snow-capped mountains! Another is the smaller likelihood that users of tanning beds will burn. While using the beds, the amount of time and strength of the lights can be controlled. The tanning-bed manufacturers claim that users are over 80 percent less likely to burn when they DO spend time in the strong sun if they have kept themselves tan on a regular basis.

So because of these advantages and the long-lived popularity of the industry, there are more and more business owners who are interested in opening a tanning salon of their own. But because competition is fierce, with many others having the same idea, there will be several things you need to consider. The first, as in all businesses and real estate, is location.

You will want to consider whether the businesses and other buildings in the immediate area are likely to attract those who are likely to be your clientèle, or at least not discourage them from frequenting your salon. It is a good idea to locate near places such as universities, coffee shops, hip shopping plazas, movie theaters, and other places where young people and women congregate.

Once you choose a promising location, next you will want to turn your attention to the look of your business, including the outside look (including the name and the look of the name in lights) and the inside including the floor plan and layout of the store. You will want to continue to cater to a hip clientèle with an atmosphere that they will feel comfortable and excited to be a part of. There are many businesses, including decorators and equipment suppliers, that are willing to help you with those aspects.

You will want to take things like the tanning beds and dressing room locations into account, and use other decorating techniques such as dropped lighting or sconces in the tanning rooms, runner and cove lighting, pocket doors and built in accessory tables.

You will always want to consider the purchase of your equipment first and foremost, as the product you offer will only be as good as the equipment you have to use to provide it. You will need to make sure to partner with manufacturers that are nothing but reputable, that offer excellent items, continuing customer support and assistance with your marketing of the products that are provided by their equipment. After all, they will be as interested as you are in seeing your business grow.

So if you are careful to make good decisions initially and follow through with doing the homework on good products and the legwork that marketing requires, it is likely that you will be pleased with the potential that the tanning salon industry offers for growth in clients and profits into the future.
