Optimum Mini Dollhouse Pieces: Pattern Tips

Floor Trim for your Dollhouse

As you are building and tweaking your dollhouse you will discover some great time saving secrets. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. This big discovery was floor trim. The discovery is not entirely new, or my own, there are many places to get doll trim, but I found the cheapest is a very thin flat balsa wood. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.

Lighting your way to a great look

Lighting and dollhouses is a little like magic at Christmas time, it adds a tremendous awe factor, but you have to be at the right point to get started. Adding Lights removes your miniature set from being just another toy to a display item that will sit no longer in the toy box, but on the living room mantel. I am not going to lie; lighting is fun, but also a bit challenging. At the same time, isn't the challenge why we are in this hobby? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. In fact with the instructions at hand you will be surprised at how easy it is. Don't expect to do it perfect the first time, try it out, make a mistake and learn from it. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember it is only hard or challenging if you make it out to be.

Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design

At that moment that you sat back and decided to create your first or next dollhouse you should have had an idea of what it would look like. Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. What you want to do is create a theme. When you get right down to it, you might have your choice set out for you as there are really only three major era styles in dollhouse furniture. Victorian is the first major theme, it is recognized by the embellishments in furniture through long curved lines, elaborate fabric, and old fashioned pieces. If you want to stand out or go with a more up to date style, Modern design will give you simplicity, technology, and some great straight lined pieces. Traditional furniture doesn't have a lot of pep, but the selection is great - this will fit any dollhouse and can be used at times in matching Modern or Victorian styles.

Placing your Furniture in a Way That Works

Your Furniture can be arranged in many different ways, and many of them will give a different feel to the room. Here are a couple of placement strategies that may be of benefit to you. Two simple layout strategies is first the triangle, and second is the square. In first simple strategy, the triangle, imagine a large triangle in the middle of the room and then take the three primary pieces of furniture and place them at the corners of that triangle. The next example is that of the square, take four pieces of furniture and arrange them so that they make a square in the room. You can also use the square approach with five pieces; just place the extra piece in the middle. This is only the tip of the iceberg as you can allow your designs to envelop any arrangement of shapes.
