Orchid Growing With Artificial Lighting

Orchids have special lighting needs that some other plants may not. In fact, light is one of the most important factors when it comes to orchid health. Orchids are native to tropical environments and require plenty of diffused light, so commonly found in tropical spots.

An eastern facing window is always the ideal spot for your orchid. It provides the right amounts of morning and afternoon light that your orchid needs. If possible, try to stay away from too much midday light, because midday sunlight is a bit too harsh for orchids. Using fluorescent lights instead of actual real sunlight is a viable option also. Keep the lights about a foot above your orchids and remember to still keep the lights only lit during daylight time.

Do your research before starting on your orchid project because no two orchid species are exactly the same. You need to know how much light your particular orchid types require. One great place to get orchid information is your nearest plant or flower store. Online sources, reading articles such as this one, are a great resource also. Ochid lighting requirements are a great example of these different needs from species to species. While some orchids thrive while sitting mostly in the shade, others require tons of light. You may want to take a look around at your home and/or garden, and simply select an orchid that would best fit into your particular settings. A good rule of thumb is that softer orchids prefer the shade and have fewer blooming periods and lengths, while harder orchids need more sun and bloom frequently.

Glowlights with timers are a good tool for orchids also because they come equipped with timers so you can set the perfect amounts of lighting times that your orchid requires. Make sure your source of light isn’t too strong, though. Orchids may seem difficult to maintain, but they really aren’t, once you follow the proper steps.
