Organic Pest Control

For some types of pest, it is necessary only to cover the plant to prevent the animal from getting access to it. Wire netting and seedbed covers are both effective and inexpensive ways of protecting your crops from birds and rodents, and ensure that their growth will not be affected. With other pests, however, the deterrents require a little more effort, but can be equally successful.

If your garden or allotment is inhabited by snails and slugs, you can set simple traps for them by hollowing out old, rotting fruit and placing them near your crops. The molluscs will be attracted by the smell, but will get stuck inside the fruit – emptying the traps daily will ensure that your crops stay safe. Similarly, leaving bowls of stale beer and fermenting fruit juice will work just as well, and the slugs will drown in the bowl.

To get rid of beetles and worms, water your crops regularly and then lay wet carpet squares on the soil. They will be unable to move from the carpet, meaning that you can easily remove them the next day and protect your crops. To protect crops from aphids, alternate the vegetables in your patch with plants that have a strong smell, such as lavender and other herbs. This will discourage the bugs, and will also mean that you benefit from extra plants when you harvest your crops.

With a little research, there are also several ways that you can avoid bugs, such as planting certain crops at particular times in the year. Similarly, rotating your crops every year, and ensuring that you clear up organic debris at the end of every growing season, can mean that less bugs are attracted to your crops. And, if necessary, you can purchase felt growing tunnels that are suitable for some crops, and will protect them from the elements as well as from pests. With a little time and effort, it is possible to find an effective method of organic pest control for every type of crop, meaning that you can successfully grow organic fruits and vegetables with no difficulty.
