Organize A Profitable Cell Phone Recycling Fundraiser

We have all seen and many participated in a cell phone drive for a good cause. A box is placed somewhere and everyone dumps in their old cell phones and the charity raises a little money. Let me emphasize the word "little". There is a better way and you can actually make a lot of money for your charity/non-profit.

How? Well let's first talk about why the traditional fundraiser raises so little. The typical cell phone drive attracts mostly phones with little or no value. People go into their drawers and take out those cell phones that have been sitting around for a couple of years. With so many new phones coming out all of the time, old phones lose value really quickly. Many of the phones are also broken.

So, how do you make a lot of money with a cell phone drive. If people donate their old cell phones at the time that they get a new cell phone then it is probably worth some good money. Last month SellYourCell.com paid $50 on average for each cell phone it bought and paid as much as $245 for a recent model iPhone. Instead of putting a box out for a month and collecting old worthless phones have a year-round phone drive. Publicize in your member newsletter, through flyers, on bulletin boards (you get the idea) that someone can sell their old cell phone at SellYourCell.com and donate the proceeds or a portion of the proceeds to your charity. They can then deduct what they would have received from SellYourCell.com from their income as a charitable donation.

Let's work through some math. Let's say you have a church or other organization with 1,500 members. On average people get a new cell phone every 18 months. Assuming every member has a cell phone then on average 1,000 of them will get new cell phones every year. If they sell them to SellYourCell.com and donate the proceeds to your organization, you could make $50,000 a year assuming we pay $50 per phone. That's a pretty good fundraiser considering your only expense is advertising and that can probably be done in a newsletter that you already print!

So, throw away that cell phone recycling box if you really want to raise some big money for your non-profit. We will also recycle those old phones that have little to no value so you can have your cake and eat it too. This is a great way for a non-profit to promote recycling for the environment and have a great fundraiser at the same time!
