Original Pizza Flavors From Italy
Two Flavors The very first concept of adding extra toppings to a piece of flatbread started in Italy. Originally, this was a meal considered to be that of poor people and was not cooked in houses of nobility and the likes. The flatbread was sold in the streets in the poorer quarters of the Italian town from which it originated, namely Naples. This was during the 16th century. By the time the 18th century rolled in, the dish had become a common enough form of food in Italy that it was served in houses of nobility and a distinct combination of ingredients and toppings was created to honor a Queen. The Pizza Margherita consisted of a flat circular bread topped with tomatoes and basil with the addition of mozzarella cheese. This was the first time that cheese was used on it. Eventually, two distinct flavors of the dish emerged, the marinara and the Margherita. The latter was named in honor of a Queen of the country during the late 18th century. Many Italians still believe that these are the two original flavors of the dish and prefer these over other more modern ones. The first kind of flatbread consists of the dough being topped with actual fresh tomatoes, garlic and oregano. A dash or more of extra virgin olive oil is added on top. This kind of pizza is named after the housewives who usually make this dish for their sailor husbands. The Margherita was favored by the Queen to whom it was served and was thus named. It consisted of the soft, flat circular bread topped with tomatoes, basil and mozzarella cheese. The choice of toppings is based on the colors of the Italian flag. Coming to America The pizza pie, as it is commonly known in the United States of America was brought by Italian immigrants who settled in New York. These were initially sold by sellers who placed them in cylindrical drums and walked through the streets to sell them. Italians who saw these were reminded of the way that the food was sold in Naples. Eventually, the pies were made and served in small grocery stores. The slices originated from the fact that not all people can afford the entire pie so they bought slices of it instead. As more and more pizzerias opened, the owners experimented with different flavors and ingredients which their customers liked. The pizza has come a long way from Italy and its humble beginnings to all over the world. The variations may be different but there are similarities to each one.
