Overcoming Stuttering

If you are overcoming stuttering problems or looking for information to get rid of stuttering then this article is going to be very beneficial to you. This is because I had a stammer for most of my childhood and teen years and realise all the drawbacks associated with this speech problem. Read on to learn how I overcame my stutter.

It is hard for someone who isn't overcoming stuttering or someone who has never stuttered before to understand what it's really like to live with this condition. This is why speech therapists often have trouble getting consistent long term results from their patients because they fail to address the root cause of stammering.

For example, when I stuttered, I was terrified of picking up the landline phone. I was very scared of stuttering on the phone and the fact I didn't know who was on the other end made me much more nervous, making my stammer worse. I also found it hard to order drinks in a bar because I had trouble with certain letters and words and it was so embarrassing!

Not to mention my interactions with the opposite sex, this was when my stammering was at its worse. There's already great pressure to make a great first impression and impress girls with your conversational skills, and having a stutter made this task like swimming with hungry sharks!

It got to a point where I was sick of this problem which was really affecting lots of other areas of my life so I decided to seek help. For about a month I did spent several hours each day reading books, watching DVDs and listening to webinars on this subject and I managed to pick up some great stuttering advice.

I realised that when I was in the process of overcoming stuttering I needed to effectively change the way I was speaking. Simply put, I had so many bad speaking habits that I needed to get rid of in order to achieve fluency.

One of the problems I had was that I was not releasing my breath at the right times when I was speaking. For example I would usually hold my breath as I spoke. This was a bad mistake because I was rushing my sentences to try and get the words out so I could breathe again! Actually, I needed to exhale whilst I spoke.

I would also mumble my words and I needed to move my lips and mouth about more as well. These were a few simple techniques I learnt but what I needed was something concrete that was going to completely get rid of my stuttering.
