Packing Your Valuables For Storage Or Moving
As I said there is a right way and a wrong way to pack various belongings, this is a list about the most common valuable possessions and how to best pack them. These tips cover electronics, metal, glass, and books. • Books: probably my most prized possessions are my books. They are heavy, musty and of course, heavy! However, when packing them you can safely pack them two different ways. You can pack them into a box upright as if you were putting them on a shelf or you can pack them spine down. In both cases this protects the bindings of your books by not putting stress on them and causing them to break. Additionally when you storing books you want to make sure they are in as dry a place as they can be. If you have concerns about moisture put several desiccant packets to help pull the moisture out. You can usually find these at your local sporting good shop in the rifle section, if not ask someone there about silica packets to remove moisture. • Metal: since most of us do not use the industrial method of grease or oil to store our metal possessions we have to resort to the more generic means! For example, after you have cleaned your silverware polished and are now getting ready to store. There is a product called “Pacific Silvercloth” and these are flannel bags that have been impregnated with silver particles to help reduce rust and tarnish. If you are more of a mechanic or machinist then when you store your equipment you will probably put a coating of oil over anything that can rust, this is easily removed with kerosene when you pull them from storage. • Glass: one of the most common things to wrap glass in is old newspapers. I’ve done this much like everyone else, however with printed newspapers you run the chance of the ink rubbing off onto your belongings. It is better to use unprinted newsprint for wrapping or bubble wrap. Bubble wrap is especially useful for artwork, mirrors, crystal and should always be wrapped with the bubbles facing outward; this helps to reduce imprints on the objects or damage to artwork. • Electronics: moisture is easily the greatest enemy of electronics. Once moisture gets into electronics, corrosion can set in and that is the end of your investment. When packing for storage, use bubble wraps to protect your equipment and make sure to put a couple of desiccant packets in the box as well. This will help to keep the moisture out and your equipment protected and ready for use! Properly packing your belongings will ensure that they last and will be ready for use when you need them. In addition to making sure they are packed correctly you also want to make sure they are in the right type of self storage unit. Possessions such as electronics, books, antiques, instruments are often better stored in climate controlled units to protect them from large changes in temperature and moisture.
