This type of advertising is so powerful because of the popularity, ease of use and efficiency of search engines in helping literally millions of people find what they want. Think of your own purchasing behaviour, if you want to find information on a product or service, your first port of call is usually an internet search engine.
Search engines provide links to thousands of other sites that someone online may be looking for. If you can get your site to appear in the first page of a search engine there is a very good chance that you will get people clicking on your site. Search engine optimisation (SEO) can help here but does not guarantee you traffic in the way that paid advertising like Pay-Per-Click does.
If you want guaranteed traffic, then you need to consider paid advertising. Given that you only pay when people click on your advert, your return on investment can be fantastic.
