Palins Hope To Protect Names Under Trademark Law

According to 2 patent applications submitted with the United States office, the Palins are seeking a trademark. Trademark protection is not generally a move that political figures take. Many famous people, however, often do take this step at some time in their career. The applications were submitted by the Palin's household lawyer. For somebody who is not famous or a politician, a trademark on a name would cost more than an personal installment loan would cover.
Trademark of the title Palin
On November 5, 2010, the Palin household lawyer officially submitted the paperwork to trademark the name "Sarah Palin." The trademark application cites uses for "Sarah Palin" as "political elections, political issues, educational and entertainment services." The number 85170226 is the serial number on the application. The U.S. Patent website carried it on there. On Sept. 15, 2010, the "Bristol Palin" application trademark cites the uses of the name and trademark for "educational and entertainment services." That patent application has serial number 85130638.
Most politicians will not get a trademark
A lookup of the trademark application filings shows that politicians trade-marking their names is a very unusual move. Trademark applications weren't filed by Barack Obama, Mike Huckabee, Time Pawlenty, Mitt Romney or Bush. Trademark attorneys told Politics Daily that political trademark applications are very rare.
What possessing a trademarked name means
Having a trademarked title is a move that many celebrities take in order to safeguard their names as brands. Everyone who utilizes the title without permission for a gain can have legal action taken against them with the trademark. Sarah Palin and Bristol Palin are just trying to safeguard property. That's what a trademarked name ends up becoming. Instead of trying to be public service figures, it is obvious that Sarah Palin and Bristol Palin are trying to protect their names that they make a living off of.
