Panic Attack While Driving: How To Stay Safe

The onset of a panic attack while driving...a scenario that is truly frightening. The demanding intensity of the physical sensations and mental distress can put you into a situation of danger when this comes on you in your car. How to Stay Safe!

* Pull Over. As soon as you can, get out of traffic and find a safe place to stop. Do not try to tough it out or think you can override the symptoms. Above all, get yourself, and your passengers if any, to safety.
* Accept you are having a panic attack and need to give it attention. Don't minimize the severity of what is happening. Admit you need to attend to what is happening to you, more than you need to appear in control, or get where you are going fast.
* Listen to soothing music while driving. Play calming and uplifting music to keep your mind relaxed and focused on the moment.
* Focus on Your Breathing. Hyperventilation symptoms from too rapid breathing mimic physical sensations of panic attack - rapid heartbeat, tingling hands, dizziness. This results from losing CO2 too fast and disturbing blood balance. Keep your breathing, deep, slow and even.
* Squeeze the Steering Wheel Tightly and Release several times. This helps you to adjust the grip you have on the wheel, to be sure you are not holding on with too much tension. Stay relaxed but firm in how you handle the wheel, monitoring becoming too tense.
* Take Steps to Overcome your Panic Attacks. There are excellent and well documented methods to deal with panic attacks in a natural and effective way.
