Parkour: The Union Of Freedom And Survival

The grace, flexibility, and sheer strength of an experienced traceur can captivate hearts. Parkour and free running draw us into that freedom of motion and the dreams we have yet to accomplish. It inspires us to vault, to jump, to fly. But this is not all there is to the art of parkour.

Parkour is firmly rooted in practical core values. It's motto is Georges Hubert's quote "Be strong to be useful". That implies so very much more than meets the eye. If one is not grateful for the gifts he has been given, he will have no desire to develop them. If one does not care for those around him, he will have no desire to help them. Parkour's motto encompasses the core values of thankfulness and love.

As a parkour practioner, you will learn to search your surroundings and circumstances for obstacles. As you explore those obstacles, you begin to see ways they can be used to make you stronger, to advance your parkour skills. They become opportunities that others overlook and avoid. As you grow, your thankfulness deepens, and it becomes even easier to spot the opportunities to progress that have been placed in your path.

But becoming stronger is not just about being the best you can be for yourself. The foundation of both parkour and free running is in the life changing experience of Georges Heburt, who watched in horror as a city perished because there were too few who were able to help the weak escape the advance of the flow of lava. They paid for their weakness and complacency with their lives.

But you don't have to. Your training can incorporate challenges that could be crucial in a crisis. You can add simple things, like practicing with a backpack so you are ready to carry supplies, or carrying a bundle so you would feel more confident removing a baby from harm's way.

Parkour can be the union of individual expression and corporate survival. It is a celebration of freedom of movement perfected that we might honor our interdependence upon each other. When experienced in this manner, parkour deepens our gratitude, love, and respect for ourselves and others, while advancing the very physical skills required to the grace, flexibility, and sheer strength of an experienced traceur.
