Passing Through The World

We are now global citizens who can sit at their homes while enjoying Brazilian parades, Mexican festivals or Norwegian tulip shows. We are now free in choice of what to view, listen, speak or write about. This world of freedom is called the World Wide Web and the Internet.

A person can own and operate a home-based business, generating income to sustain his or her family while spending time with said family. The 9 to 5, suit and tie rat race is now an option and not an obligation.

Nevertheless, it is imperative to note that these high-tech items and this relaxed lifestyle are luxuries and not available to everyone which essentially means we still have obstacles to surmount until we are a complete and total “global village.” Lesser developed countries moving at a slower pace have a more pressing priority than obtaining the newly released Razr phone; they are desperate for food, clothing and shelter.

We must first penetrate these areas and enrich their lives in the most compassionate of ways as would a village: a village consisting of closeness, resulting in a kind, sympathetic and generous neighbourly spirit. Until we fixate less upon advancing further with gadgets and gizmos, higher speed connections and more, more of everything, we must squelch poverty and tend to all of our fellow planetary citizens in order to truly become a “global village.”

As Paul Saffo writes, “Even though the world is definitely shrinking in terms of accessibility of information and ease in communication, it is still alien and a far removed reality for many. Due to a non-uniform development of different communities and countries, the world is certainly not a global village as of yet.”
