People Are Flocking To Popular Distance Learning Programs

Much to the chagrin of traditional colleges and universities, countless numbers of people are considering online degrees for meeting their higher education goals. With more colleges and universities offering online programs, those numbers are expected to continue to rise.

As recently as June 2007, students by the thousands were enrolling in online degree programs. It was estimated by 2008 that for every ten students enrolled in college one of those would be enrolled in an online degree program. The reasons are as varied as the students themselves.

What are the most popular online degrees? The answer to that question changes with each passing year.

Do students enroll in mainly undergraduate degrees, or are they equally interested in graduate online degrees? It might be interesting to note that students interested in an online degree can begin with an Associate degree, continue through a Bachelor's degree, and complete their educational career with a Master's degree, all achieved through online colleges and universities from the comfort of their own homes.

Associate degree programs that have attracted the most students are:

• Business Administration
• Early Childhood Education
• Criminal Justice
• Accounting

Those interested in Bachelor's degree programs have sought degrees in:

• Criminal Justice
• Psychology
• Business Administration
• Health Administration

Master's degree candidates have chosen the following degrees:

• Business Administration
• Counseling
• Psychology
• Health Administration

Why would someone choose to work toward furthering their education online rather than by going to a traditional school? The biggest reason is that on-campus degrees don't often meet a person's schedule and an online degree program is more likely to do that. If a student is currently working full-time, it might be difficult to fit traditional classes into their day. Distance learning classes can be taken at any time of the day or night. They also don't require you to spend the money for travel to and from the college.

While not all students who seek out an online course of study are currently working, that doesn't mean that a student doesn't have other obligations that keep them from going to a campus for classes. Perhaps a student has family obligations or the course of study they are most interested in isn't available at a local college or university. These are but a few of the possible reasons a student may choose a distance learning degree program.

Business and criminal justice degrees continue to be the popular choice among those attending online colleges or universities. In 2007, more than 20% of all college students pursued degrees in business.

In 2004, the online degrees of choice were: Business Administration, Psychology, Nursing, Engineering, Liberal Arts, K12 Education, Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood Education, and Health Administration. The majority of these degrees were for Bachelor's or Master's level course work. No matter the year, it seems that business, healthcare, education, and engineering are among the most sought after of all online degrees.

Those pursuing a business degree often understand the competitiveness of the field. Because they understand this fact, many employees seek to increase their abilities by taking additional coursework in hopes they'll remain valuable to their employer. A student interested in business can begin with an Associates degree and continue through to a Master's in Business Administration. Focused or concentrated studies in Human Resources and Finance may be pursued.

If a student is interested in a degree in a healthcare field, the sky is the limit because well-trained health professionals are in high demand. Nursing degrees range from an Associates to a PhD. Education and Health Systems Administration degrees are quickly becoming some of the most popular of all healthcare degrees.

The joke has always been that if you can't do, you could always teach. Despite this joke, the Education field continues to be one of the most sought after of all fields. Most students seeking online degrees are opting for the higher degrees of Master's and PhD to continue to compete in their chosen field, especially in the Education field.

While those interested in undergraduate Engineering degrees must continue to do so on a campus mainly due to hands-on required work, graduate degrees for Engineering are beginning to open up. This is a career that offers high potential for great salaries in the future.

Online degrees have opened up doors of opportunity that have not been previously available. They have made it easier for students meet their obligations by offering flexibility not afforded by traditional schools. While any student would miss out on the camaraderie of attending a physical college, the benefits far outweigh the minor losses they would face.
