People Wearing Headsets While Exercising Are More Prone To Injury

The Injury Prevention Journal claims the risk of injury through the wearing of headphones or earphones by pedestrians is growing. Is it any wonder with all the headphone manufacturers striving to make noise canceling headsets that joggers, walkers and skaters are having more accidents since they can’t hear traffic or potential problems? While these noise canceling headsets are a great innovation to sound quality for listening to your favorite music, audio books or even talking on your cell phone, they do block out the surrounding environmental noises.

The University of Maryland has been studying injury from distraction. According to an article posted by Trevor Mogg, Digital Trends, “The University of Maryland researchers noted that while distraction caused by cell phone use in cars has been looked at in depth, the risk of injury through the wearing of headphones or earphones by pedestrians has received far less attention. The retrospective study revealed an increase in incidents involving those wearing headphones, uncovering 116 reports of death or injury of pedestrians between 2004 and 2011. Most victims were male (68 percent), with 67 percent under 30 years of age. Of all the accidents in the study, 55 percent involved trains and 89 percent occurred in urban areas. In almost a third of the incidents, it was claimed a warning was sounded prior to the accident.”

“As we make more and more enticing devices, the risk of injury from distraction and blocking out other sounds increases,” researcher Dr. Richard Lichtenstein said.

Do you exercise while wearing headphones? Are you out in traffic? You may want to reconsider your habits. Although it’s nice to have great sound quality, not being able to hear an approaching car or truck speeding towards you while you are crossing the street can be fatal. In most states it is illegal to drive with both ears covered by headphones. Although the laws are meant to prevent distracted driving, some common sense should prevail when jogging or walking in traffic.

Do you still want to wear a nice stereo headset while you exercise? A good compromise would be to restrict your exercising to the gym and purchase a great noise canceling stereo headset. This particular model works with your iPod, iPhone, MP3 player or Droid Smartphone. It has an inline microphone so you can switch over to a call while you are listening to your music. Best of all, they are very comfortable as well as have a great sound quality. I use them for my Kindle Fire as well as my Droid X Smartphone (but not when driving).
