Personal Development And What It Means To You
If we wish to be and remain successful then we need to keep up with our personal development. We need to push ourselves within our supervisions asking for more specific training. We need to make it known to our superiors we are willing to do what it takes to progress within the company. Most people will leave it up to their supervisor to source relevant and up to date courses specific to their career development and more importantly personal development. If you wish to progress within the company you need to check out relevant courses available not only internally but what is on offer externally. You will have to raise these issues within the supervision period. Have all the information to hand. Cost, duration, certificated and that it is a recognised body who run the course. You will need to have a list of the benefits it will have on your personal development and the benefits it will have for your employer. Discuss how it will improve your work, you need to give the course value and argue a case that you and the company cannot afford to miss the opportunity. It is a common misconception that supervision is a time where the employer informs the employee if they are happy with their performance and what they need to do to remain in employment. This is not correct. Equally the employee has to use this time to inform the employer what they need to do to retain your services. The employee has to push for courses that are relevant to their personal development and thus improve the company’s productivity and quality of work. You need to remember personal development is a benefit for all concerned. If you are working hard to peruse a certain career position within the company, then both sides should be seen to support your personal development and ensure clear targets are set and adhered to. Your career is important and personal development is the map to your success. In supervision it is often the case that the supervisee will not be prepared or even have the correct amount of time to perform a quality supervision. You have the right to this time and it is vital you demand either to re schedule or request another supervisor. Without this time to discuss your personal development you will not move on and may even be left behind. Lastly within your supervision ensure the supervisee records all that is discussed. Ensure time scales on both sides are agreed and recorded. Ensure clear goals are set and each person is clear of the others expectations. At the end of the supervision a recorded statement should be signed by both parties and a copy given to each. It is very important to insist on this practice as it is your record of what you expect to be done by the time of your next supervision. It is vital for your personal development.
