Photo Shoot

No matter if a photo shoot takes place in a studio or on location, preparing for a photo shoot is a lot of work for wardrobe, the makeup artists, hairstylists and photographer, but not so much preparation and work for the models. If the photo shoot is on location, some more effort goes into the planning, like travel arrangements, refreshments and accommodation. On location will also happen in some season where the weather conditions will fit the shoot. Snow in winter, the beach, sun and sea in summer. Some shoots take place in strange places, like underground in a mine shaft perhaps, or up in the mountains, or a sports field, hospitals or wherever. If you can think it, a photo shoot can take place there.

The people from wardrobe have to make sure all their bits and pieces of clothing that the models are going to wear are clean and presentable. It will not do to have a model getting photographed in an outfit, whether it is a special garment or bathing suit, with split seams or with some stain. All clothing should also be crease free and for this they will tag along many paraphernalia, like a steam iron, some needle and thread, scissors, and lots and lots of pins and safety pins.

The makeup artists usually have large trays or cases of makeup with which they can transform virtually anyone from an ugly duckling into a graceful swan. They are brilliant when they have to cover up blemishes, rashes or even the odd bruise mark. They have the perfect solution to cover up sunburned skins and to make the palest person look blushingly healthy. Red rimmed eyes? No problem! With some white eyeliner on the insides of the eyes, some smoky grey eye shadow and a few layers of black mascara, a heavy night of partying or red teary eyes are brilliant and shiny again.

Hairstylists have to be prepared for the oddest demands and notions from either the designer or the photographer. Besides the usual brushes, combs, gels and hairsprays, you will also find bows, curlers, colored spray, flowers and most importantly, some clever hair pieces to give volume and structure where needed. Some real fancy hair techniques have developed out of pure need, during photo shoots.

Photographers have their photographic equipment, cameras, filters, lighting and rolls and rolls of film to take care of. Some photographers give a running commentary or loud encouragement during a photo shoot, while others prefer to work in silence. Yet there are others who love to play music, from loud thumping rock, to crooning love songs, to classical music.

And the most important people at a photo shoot? The models of course. When you think photo shoot, you think model. When you think model, you think glamour, beauty, fashion and famous perfume. Models rock up with just themselves at photo shoots, no extra luggage, no extra clothing, nothing for their hair, just themselve, and their favourite fragrance, to boost their strutt and confidence during an exhausting photo shoot. The models make the shoot.

Only then does the artistry of the makeup artists and the hairstylists come into the picture. They are the miracle workers behind the scenes, they cajole and praize the reluctant or tired models, and silently perform their miracles so that the photographer can do their job.
