Cooper beaten as CNN anchor
The beating of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper happened while he was covering the street violence in Egypt. This is what the NY Times reports. In order to cover the protests, CNN sent Cooper to Cairo with a news crew. There were anti-government and pro-government proponents fighting in Cairo. This occurred in Tahrir Square. Supporters of President Hosni Mubarak have also been targeting reporters and news crews, and Cooper was punched within the head at least 10 times, but in a later CNN broadcast did not appear to have been injured.
Battle over Tahrir Square
Street violence between rival groups of demonstrators has erupted in several areas of Cairo. CNN accounts that Tahrir Square is now a battlefield near the Egyptian Museum looted. Vehicles have been overturned to form makeshift barricades, and implements from rocks to Molotov cocktails have been hurled by either side in the clash. There has been gun fire and tear gas. The Egyptian army is attempting to stop fires that have been set on buildings. President Mubarak has promised to step down after his term expires later this year, however those concessions matter little too many who consider him a dictator.
Egypt's army demands end of violence
The Egyptian army has called for the mobs to cease all violent activity, in accordance with Al Jazeera. Army spokesman, Ismail Etman, went on Television to talk to the people. He asked that individuals stop fighting and return home. Etman looks at it like he was asking the "honest men of Egypt" to "look forward to the future." In order to stop demonstrations, the army has said it won't use force while the concerns the anti-government demonstrators have are valid.
