Physician Recruitment Relies On A Steadfast Community
When a hospital needs more physicians, this becomes the chief priority among the board of trustees, administration and medical staff. Successful recruitment requires community effort, and this is something that recruiting hospitals have learned through years of experience. The recruitment process will continue despite areas of improvement in the health care delivery system as revealed by thourough research and study. Shortage of competent manpower in the field of medical wellness had long been an issue in the Unites States. These rural areas have been declared as medically unaided communities, according to a recently published federal document. This has developed a point-rating system for each community, which includes categories such as the population percentage on lowest poverty bracket, percentage of individuals beyond the age of 65, rate of newborn deaths, and lastly, the fraction of primary care doctors against every thousand of the citizens. Only the practitioners specializing in ob-gyne, internal medicine, family health care and pediatrics are considered to be primary care physicians. After establishing this, a consensus between the board and members of the staff must be made to determine the kind of services demanded. Recently the main goal of most hospitals is to recruit more physicians specializing in obstetrics gynecology. There is also a need for more family practice trained physicians and emergency room specialists. Recruiting physicians is a complex process, one that involves rolling out the carpet by members of the community and making sure whatever assets the community and the hospital have to offer are displayed to the physicians' fullest advantage. Placing ads that reach a wide range of physician audiences throughout America who read popular medical journals is the first step in hiring. In the hopes of enticing med school graduates or residents in medical schools, letters are written and sent to these medical colleges. Friends of friends of the community's young doctors are constantly contacted, while young members of the community who are known to engage in Medicine are asked to stay in close contact. Upon learning of the doctor's interest, he is invited to tour the town and see the local amenities. A tour around the hospital, introduction to the medical staff, a hearty lunch and possibly and overnight stay awaits him. Special parties take place in the staff homes for the potential doctors while there are times these introductions only occur within the hospital. The doctor will be informed that he can partake in developing new specialties as the hospital will purchase the necessary equipment that will add to its existing support services like the radiology and pathology laboratories. Insurance coverage, a good office area as well as the program that will enable him to pursue higher studies will also be introduced to him. But the efforts of physician recruiters must go beyond the medical realm. The physicians that are parents must be introduced to the new school their children will be going to so that the children can come and get a feel of their would-be school. Local bankers who will give adequate advice on home loan and mortgage loans as well as real estate agents with sound housing advice will be introduced to the new physicians. The hospital board and their recruitment team's effort might still not be enough. While they can point the potential recruit to the right direction, it is up to the members of the community to carry on with the recruitment effort by acting as resource people and answering any questions the new doctor may have.
