Physicians Are In Need Of Government Financial Aid

Literally thousands of American based physicians are now making it known that they would like to see government backed national health insurance, which they want to see cover every American's health care needs and should save billions as well. After health care reform disintegrated in Congress during the Clinton administration due to the fierce lobbying from the medical, pharmaceutical and insurance industries, doctors contend that private sector solutions for health care reform have proven unsuccessful.

The assertion of these doctors is that the Congressional efforts being made to allow a prescription drug that helps senior citizens and the disabled will only move more government funds to the private organizations and leave very little benefit for customers. Physicians suggest implementing a single payer system which would upgrade and expand the basic principles of the Medicare program which currently provides coverage to senior citizens and those with disabilities.

Managed care organizations, primarily in the form of HMOs, were lauded as the only hope for health care reform, but instead have failed to serve the public and have driven Medicare costs up by billions of dollars. Created with the ideas of market efficiency, hospitals owned by profit driven investors have been plagued by constant scandals. Vending medicines for prices which are beyond the affordable range of the people who require them most desperately, pharmaceutical corporations and medical companies have made the greatest profits while benefiting from the lowest tax rates of all industry segments, physicians claim. The doctors put forth this single payer system proposal in the highly respected journal of medicine.

Two previous surgeon generals, as well as a major American medical journal's past editor, are among the leaders of this panel of doctors seeking national health insurance. A lecturer from Harvard Medical School has stated that our current system will not be able to last for long since it is so evidently destroying itself. What it comes down to is single payer is not just a best choice, it's become the only choice.

However, as issued in a statement by the American medical association's president, they are still stubbornly resistant to the idea of a single payer health care system. He says that if the United States ends up bringing in the single payer system, it would mean trading off one problem for an whole group of problems that are equally as serious. These problems could include a long wait for services, slow timing in adopting new technologies and maintaining facilities, the possible creation of a bureaucracy that may effect the patient's authority and that of their doctor in making decisions about their medical care, as these are all negatives associated with the single payer system.

America's Association of Health Plans, the lobbyist group of the managed health care industry at large, also sits in opposition to the single payer plan, as it would eliminate hospitals for profit and all health maintenance organizations. The American Medical Association claims that less than one percent of the many thousands of doctors in the United States account for the doctors who are in favor of seeing this proposal put in effect. However, one physician noted that many doctors who previously were against the idea of national health care sponsored by the government now are in support of government health initiatives.
