Picking On Sarah Palin: What Ticks Me Off

There is no stopping her - or her spoofs (don’t you think Tina Fey was just brilliant last week?!). From the hockey mom statements, to the numerous gaffs media has accused her of committing, Sarah Palin is everywhere! She has increased the sales of a particular eyeglass design, and her hairstyle is copied by a lot of women. It doesn’t help that stars like Matt Damon, Lindsay Lohan have made their arguments against her - even if it were for or against her, it doesn’t really matter coz it’s still publicity.
As a women, it would be natural for me to support another woman - but shallow of me to make my choice based on gender. In that line, there is something about Sarah Palin that ticks me off - several in fact.

“There’s a place in Hell reserved for women who don’t support other women,” – Oh really? And so if I don’t support you, I’m going straight to hell! Que horror!! Statements like these only further the divide between men and women. It’s a bad misquote and she should have thought of it before she even said it.

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for supporting other women, but the actual quote,“There’s a place in Hell reserved for women who don’t help other women.” is about helping women in a different context – not in the political arena.

Aerial Hunting – perhaps I don’t know how it is to live in Alaska so I can’t really make an informed opinion about hunting wolves. However I think that killing animals in a way that is inhumane is a no-no for me (and putting a $150 bounty?!). The fact that she supports this is unnerving.

“I’m not gonna give the answers the moderator wants to ask for” – then why the heck did she agree to join the debates in the first place. Although charming, she has this nasty habit of avoiding the question or veering off topic, or worse talking about another topic when she doesn’t know a thing about the topic at hand.

Like Matt Damon I also want to know if she truly believes that men and dinosaurs walked the earth side by side thousands of years ago or to be precise, whether dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago. I respect her belief in her faith and I seriously don’t care on any of the candidates religious beliefs, but I think there are subjects in religion proven otherwise by science.

And of course, the controversial rape kit. I don’t like the fact that women in her state foot the bill for their rape kits. CMON. Seriously. A woman gets raped and gets charged for the purchase of the rape kit? Where’s the compassion here? And here I thought women in politics would be supporting other women. Guess I’m throwing your misquote right back at you.

To be fair, I’m sure she has things in her campaign that would interest me. And perhaps the media has scrutinized her too closely for comfort or has painted a rather ugly picture of her. It’s our role to find out the truth about it, before we go out and vote on Nov 4, 2008.
