Piper Dakota: Why People Love It
Piper takes on one design and gets on to create a variety of airplanes. Since the 1960's the company, Piper Aircraft, Inc., started building single-engine airplanes with its PA-24 series. From there the manufacturer developed the PA-28 Cherokee with a basic four-place, fixed-gear single-engine. This line of aircraft had many kinds of models that followed it and the most powerful of them is the Dakota. This model may not be considered the fastest but it is the most flexible Piper aircraft. Recently Micro AeroDynamics, a vortex generator manufacturing company, announced that it has added the Piper PA-28 tapered wing series as one of the airplanes that can be upgraded to have Micro Vortex Generators. This shows how the Dakota can be flexible in terms of adding on to its capacity. This vortex generator allows for a nine percent reduction in stall speed, a much higher roll rate, improved aileron control and improves your controllability for slow speed flights. These are attached to the vertical stabilizer and all units are plastered on the flying surfaces. The PA-28-236 Dakota was the last of the variant manufactured and this was brought into the market in 1979. This Dakota has a larger dimension with a fuselage stretch of 7.5 inches and its span increases to 3.4 feet. This has a new semi-tapered wing planform. A new engine was put in place, the Lycoming O-540-J3A5D which has a 235 horsepower. As an owner you would love how this gives you better fuel efficiency and with much less noise and vibration while on flight. Even with the praises received by Piper Dakota there was one Dakota that was not highly acclaimed. The PA-28-201T Turbo Dakota was created with a turbocharged Continental engine with only 200 horsepower. It's unknown why they opted for a less powerful engine and this has been a bit of a turn-off for buyers. This caused many mechanical troubles as well. It was recorded to have an accident rate of four times higher around the world. There were only 91 Turbo Dakotas manufactured as it stopped producing after a year. Interesting though is the fact that there are Turbo Dakota owners who still love this model and found some ways to remedy the few problems they found with their plane. As you are out to buy your own Dakota, look for your preferred model, whether you would go for their Turbo Dakota or not. If you choose the latter be sure that you make some pre-purchase inspection and find out how it was previously maintained as you wouldn't want to buy a piece of scrap that may hide many troubles. If you plan to deviate from buying a Turbo-charged plane, check the model's year as some Turbo Dakotas were sold as a 1980 model even when the production was made in 1979. So just check the engine to be sure. Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com James David teaches people how to buy single engine airplanes & has a passion for the Piper Dakota For Sale |
