Pizza On Film - Great Moments Mixing Cinema And The Best Italian Export

Pizza is one of the world's most beloved foods. While there are plenty of small towns in America where you might be out of luck if you want an egg roll, there are probably few where you couldn't get a delicious slice of Italy's finest pie if you so desired. And you probably would desire, since almost everyone has some variation they like. Hollywood isn't blind to this phenomenon. While few are the movie theaters that serve it (which is a national disgrace, by any measure), there have been quite a few films that have had memorable moments involving the pride of New York City. Here are some of those moments.

Mystic Pizza

If it has the food in the title, it certainly has to belong to this list. MP is best remembered as Julia Roberts' first exposure to the masses, but it is more than just a big star's debut and it is more than just a story about a pizzeria. The movie creates sympathetic characters through female bonding and avoids many of the chick-flick clichés that often envelop similar films. Check it out, but don't even think about watching it without your favorite delivery place on standby!

Spiderman 2

The second of Sam Raimi's Spider-man films opens with Peter Parker having taken a job as a delivery boy for an NYC pizzeria. Riding a bicycle through NYC traffic while trying to get those pies delivered as quickly as possible leads to Parker taking advantage of his chemical gifts. Of course, even with these gifts, he still winds up fired. Some are of the opinion that this is the best of the Spider-Man trilogy, and at least some of the accolades have to come from those who appreciated their favorite food getting some screen time.

Do The Right Thing

Spike Lee's seminal magnum opus was released into a cinematic world unprepared for such a raw and in-your-face look at American race relations. Exploding off the indie scene and into the mainstream, it is the film that made Lee a star, though some would argue he would never again achieve this perfect blend of entertainment and message. But what about the pizza? Well, much of the movie takes place in a pizzeria, where Lee's "Mookie" works as a delivery boy.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Amy Heckerling released this monumental teen comedy into the ripe world of the 80s, where it soared like the vocals of the hair metal bands climbing the charts at that time. While a certain scene featuring 80s beauty Phoebe Cates was probably a favorite among young men of the time, no one would ever forget the introduction of young Sean Penn as the troublemaker Spicoli. His ordering of a pizza in the middle of class remains a classic comedy moment to this day.
