Planning The Greatest Motorcycle Road Trip

Unlike a road trip in a car, a long journey on a motorcycle takes more planning and consideration. There are a number of vital decisions to make about the route and a number of factors to bear in mind to ensure no faults occur whilst riding.

Deciding on a route is the first consideration. Be concise with this and stick to your plan. Make clear travel goals about how long you intend to be away, where you intend to go and what kind of places you want to stay in. As much as touring the open road with the wind in your hair sounds appealing, it is better to plan ahead than to just let the road lead you where it wants.

Consider the rules of the road and regulations in different regions and adapt your riding style accordingly.

Be sure to stay away from narrow roads and choose less populated roads to travel on. Once you have decided on a route and stop overs its time to inspect your bike. Do this before packing it to ensure you don’t miss anything. The Motorcycle Safety Foundation suggests checking the tyres, controls, lights, oils and fluids and chassis.

Once the bike has been checked you can begin packing. Remember the weight of the bike and the weight of your luggage must even each other out. Ensure you pack the necessary items that will provide comfort without overloading yourself with unnecessary weight and bulk. Always check the weather forecast and pack accordingly.

A touring suit is always a wise choice but if this is financially unviable then pack a few thin layers instead of a few thick layers. Be sure to pack energy yielding foods to stay sharp on the roads and enough water to get you from stop to stop. Also ensure you have a bike insurance:
