If you are planning to build a home or add some rooms to your existing house, one of the biggest questions you will need to answer concerns the lighting and ventilation aspects. Most experienced architects and builders know about this issue. Which is why where the doors and windows are placed, and what materials need to be used is often the biggest criterion. The other thing is how big you want to or need to make the windows. While bigger windows do offer more light and ventilation, they could prove to be a nightmare if the structural issues are not properly resolved.

On the other hand, if there is insufficient lighting or ventilation, you will need to spend a whole lot of money on putting up artificial systems like air conditioners or heaters. Not only will these cost a lot, they are also not very environment friendly and may result in overall contribution to global warming.

The third thing you need to ask yourself is how large is the room going to be? One of the common methods of calculating the ideal size of the windows is approximately seven to ten percent of the area of the room. So for a room that is a 100 square foot in size, the ideal window should not be more than seven to ten feet. Anything bigger (unless there’s a specific requirement for the same) will not be ideal.

One last thing that you need to remember is that most building codes in cities require the provision of some sort of fire escape. If your window needs to include this, you must make sure that the design incorporates this element. In addition to being an aesthetic element, windows could prove to be life saving devices too!
