Plastic surgeons are big advocates of photography. No, they aren't out at the local bird-watching spot taking pictures of the wildlife (or, at least, not in any greater percentage than any other occupation). Rather, they understand how important pictures are to their profession. And if you are thinking about having cosmetic surgery, it would help if you understood the importance of them as well.

Choosing a Doctor

This is the first instance where photographs play a major role. If you're trying to choose among plastic surgeons, insist on seeing photographs of their work. This is nearly as important as doing some research into their background and reading patient reviews. While cosmetic surgery is a complex, medically significant field, it has almost as much to do with aesthetics as it does science. A good doctor will be part artist and part surgeon. His tools will be the various medical instruments rather than a paintbrush, but he will call upon his aesthetic viewpoint to drive him forward. Is it possible for an unskilled artist to become a very skilled surgeon? Probably, but it is nonetheless important for you to look at previous work and make sure that his idea of what looks good matches up with your own.

Your Own Results

The second instance where photographs are important to plastic surgeons and their patients is in letting a patient evaluate their results. People tend to have a different way of looking at themselves. This is human nature. We look different in the mirror, after all, then we do to other people simply because of the reversed reflection. But we have a different picture of ourselves in our heads, typically, than even the mirror gives us. This is why it can be difficult for a patient to successfully evaluate their own progress and results without seeing concrete evidence.

It's not terribly uncommon for patients to feel depressed about their results. Recovery often takes a bit longer than they expected (even when given an accurate time frame) and the results may not be as dramatic as they hoped. Often, seeing before and after pictures can all but eliminate this disappointment. When you are able to look at a side by side image and analyze the difference, it will often be much more striking than you thought. Many plastic surgeons incorporate photos into their procedures for this very reason and it is a good reason to put aside any reservations you might have had about being photographed.
