Plato's Cave: Take A Look Inside
Many people once lived in a cave. The cave was very dark but they lit it with torches. Upon the wall there were shadows, and the shadows were from things of the world outside. But the people did not know that; they thought the shadows 'were' the actual things, and had no concept at all that there could be anything else besides the shadows. One day one of the cave people got restless. He wandered around the cave and saw a bright light. As he went closer to the light, it almost blinded him. He found the entrance to the cave and went outside. He could not believe his eyes. He saw the most incredibly beautiful things. He saw flowers, and huge aromatic trees. He saw things flaying through the air- butterflies, songbirds, and buzzing bees. He saw a graceful deer running swiftly in the distance. He was so moved that he fell to the ground and wept. He knew the shadows in the cave were a lie and raced back to tell everyone. He got back to the cave and shouted the great news to everyone. He encouraged everyone to come out with him and see all these wonders for themselves. Then they too, could know the truth and enjoy the beauty of this world. But he was surprised, as no one seemed interested. Worse, they all seemed a bit afraid and even angry. Then the leaders seized the man and told everyone not to listen to him- that he was crazy. They took the man out into another part of the cave and beat him to death with clubs. And no one dared to leave the cave after that.
