Playing The Game Has Enriched Their Lives

The highest rank of the Girl Scout’s Explorer's Game was completed by getting eight quests and going on a great adventure. When several people were ready for an adventure, they were summoned to report at a certain time and place. Sometimes it was early in the morning and a trip by boat up the creek was made where birds, flowers, trees and all sorts of wild life were abundant. This helped to round out the experiences that had gone before and provided the "thrill" which a real adventure should give. The players were now called Revealers and wore a disk showing a whole firefly with abdomen brightly colored with orange to signify light. But the game was not over for these people, for, as Revealers, they had to give light to others. They now made the quests, the sealed orders and planned the adventures for the rest: they were the makers of the game.

It was with great spontaneity and enthusiasm that the Revealers responded to the requests for suggestions for quests. The possibilities of the game are great, for included with the quests about birds and flowers, have been some pertaining to health habits and health observations. Many of the phases of camp craft having to do, for example, with selection of firewood, and building of fires might be included. Effort was made to have a variety of subjects covered with an occasional easy question. It was also necessary for the proper functioning of the game to have the completion of the quest depending upon actual observation.

As a result of the game, there was a marked change in the attitude of the girls and councillors as a whole toward the birds, trees, flowers and other wild life. About five hundred girls and thirty adults became keener observers, and also acquired a certain amount of knowledge. But most important was the apparent desire to know more about the things they saw and the ability to grasp the significance of their observations.

That this new interest was not temporary was indicated by the desire of many campers to have the quests sent home to them so that they might continue the game. Others have discussed the possibility of using the game during the winter in their Girl Scout troops. So the Bonnie Brae Explorers have developed a seeing eye and an inquiring mind. Playing the game has enriched their lives because of the awakened and sincere interest in the world about them. They hope that others will try a similar game.
