Plotting Your Plot And Customizing Your Characters

Plot and character development are the foundation of every great story. Without a well established plot, nothing will happen in your screenplay. Without well defined characters, no one will care what happens in your screenplay. Both the plot and the characters can make or break the movie.

So, it is very important that you “plot” your plot carefully to make it exciting and creative. Then, customize you characters to make them the compelling forces behind your plot.

A simple way to help with the whole plot and character developing process is by simply asking yourself questions. Start with the plot. Ask yourself such questions as, “What’s my story about?” “What are some really cool and exciting things I want to happen during my story?” “How do I want my story to end?” This will get the creative juices to flowing.

Then, do the same for developing your characters. Once you know “what” you want to write about, develop the “who” of the “what”. Make your characters come alive by asking questions like, “Who will be my main characters?” “What do they look like?” “What kind of personality do they need to have to play the roles in my story?”

Taking the time to ask yourself such simple questions will enhance you writing skills. It may seem perhaps a bit too simplistic, but it is sometimes out of simplicity that greatness is achieved.
