There is a new notion in scouting camera technology that is taking the hunting industry by storm. Scouting camera manufacturers are integrating time lapse video technology into their cameras, and giving hunters an special advantage.

Time lapse video, often referred to as TLV, works much differently than the ordinary game cameras on the market today. In order for a standard game camera to capture pictures of game, an animal must pass within range of the sensor. The detection range of a passive infrared sensor is typically only 30 to 45 feet on most scouting cameras. If a deer passes just outside of the range of the infrared sensor, then no pictures will be taken. You need to analyze the effective range of an infrared sensor before hanging your game camera.

TLV game cameras operate under a totally different principal than typical game cameras, and give hunters a totally new view in the woods. Pictures are taken at pre-determined time intervals. The wait in between each picture can usually be set to different intervals, say every 5 or 10 seconds. What this gives you is a better view of activity in the woods. You get pictures of game that would normally have been out of range of your game camera's detector. A TLV game camera will capture images of wildlife, as long as the game is within the field of view of your camera location.

This capability was first seen as an optional mode on some models of Cuddeback Scouting Cameras and Reconyx Scouting Cameras, and may be referred to as a Food Plot Mode. More recently, companies are introducing dedicated TLV game cameras that operate only in a TLV mode. Companies like Day6Outdoors are selling the Plotwatcher TLV scouting camera. The introduction of this dedicated TLV camera has hunters seeing what they've been missing all along. Computer software is included with the Plotwatcher that allows you play the images like a movie. Hunters can now view deer as they enter the frame, and see the paths and trails that they are moving on. You can save time with the motion search option in the software. This will allow you to jump directly to the pictures where the images change, indicating wildlife activity. This is a big time saver.

Gun hunters and bow hunters alike will have increased chance for success when using a time lapse video scouting camera. A gun hunter now has the ability to understand what type of game activity is occurring in big fields or big open areas. A bow hunter can now align their stand location to increase the chances of being on the hottest trail and getting to take that close shot.

Time lapse video game cameras are a recent, hot item. If you are used to scouting the old way, then you should definitely give them a shot. TLVs are a red-hot new trend that you can expect to see more of.
