Pointers To A Brief History Of Watercolor Rendering

Water painting is a method of drawing in which paint made out of pigments suspended in a water soluble medium is used for its rendering. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact beginning of the usage of this type of art if one were to write a brief history of watercolor rendering.

The only way to write a brief history of watercolor rendering is to go by streaks of evidence left behind by history on the use of this paint as a means of art. The cavemen in Europe, during its Paleolithic ages, have been found to have first used this type of art. Evidence of its use, can then be found after a break in time, from the European middle ages.

The Renaissance period can be said to be the first point from where continuous trace of this art form can be established. One gets to see master pieces in Germany created by the renaissance artist Albrecht Duer who lived from 1471 to 1528, who used the watercolor method of rendition. The first known school created and established for the learning of watercolor painting method was also started in Germany by Hans Bol between 1534 to 1593.

Watercolor was not, though, used extensively in painting works; it was used only for creating small sketches, cartoons and copies. However, for rendition of botanical subjects, this type of art was used as it had the capability of providing close to real life effect on the wildlife or flora and fauna objects being rendered by the artist.

It was during the 18th century that watercolor method of painting spread in popularity and usage, and especially so in England. Using this type of art to depict topography was found to be very effective and, therefore, designers started to use this form of painting in their works which required depiction of topography.

With its possibility to render near life subjects, the continuation and popularity of using this form of art progressed with time and crept into the reading books of the time. It still remains a very popular option of rendering art.
