Popular Walking Trails In The Southeast Charlotte Area

There are several places in the southeast Charlotte, North Carolina metro area where residents and visitors can enjoy walking and jogging trails. A greenway system in south Charlotte, a park and greenway in the town of Matthews, and a large county park near Waxhaw, North Carolina are popular options. These places provide opportunities to get some exercise and enjoy the natural surroundings.

The McAlpine Creek Greenway is Charlotte’s original greenway park. The greenway winds through an area near Independence Boulevard, Monroe Road, and Sardis Road. The trail is a mix of asphalt and gravel path. It leads through wooded areas and past a marsh and small pond. Hikers can usually spot lots of birds, and they will sometimes see beavers and river otter. Deer can often be seen at dusk. Even though the greenway is located near busy roads, it is an urban oasis in southeast Charlotte. The primary access and parking area is at McAlpine Creek Community Park on Monroe Road. The 1.5 mile Cottonwood Nature Trail is accessed off McAlpine Creek Greenway. Parking for the nature trail is located at James Boyce Community Park. Across Margaret Wallace Road the McAlpine Creek Greenway connects to the four mile long Campbell Creek Greenway. This path runs along a tributary to McAlpine Creek between Harris Boulevard and Margaret Wallace Road. The greenway is a favorite birding location in the Charlotte area. Parking and access is on Margaret Wallace Road across from the fire station. These greenways are open daily from 7am until dusk.

The City of Matthews, North Carolina has developed a two mile greenway that links downtown Matthews to Squirrel Lake Park. The path winds along Four Mile Creek and past a pond with a fishing pier. There are asphalt and boardwalk sections of path. Parking is available at Squirrel Lake Park, located at 1631 Pleasant Plains Road. The park also offers a disc golf course, a playground, and restroom facilities.

Cane Creek Park is a popular Union County park near Waxhaw, North Carolina. The centerpiece of the park is scenic Cane Creek Lake, a trophy bass lake. Six different trails lead through the 1,050 acre park and around the lake. Other Cane Creek Park amenities include fishing, boating, camping, and mountain bike trails, plus swimming and miniature golf in the summer season. The park is located at 5213 Harkey Road in Waxhaw. There is an entrance fee of $4 per vehicle.

These parks and greenways provide the perfect escape from the noise and traffic of a busy urban area. All of these options give users the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy nature.
