Possible Risks In Hair Replacement Surgery

Just like any surgery or medical procedures, hair replacement surgery may have possible risks and uncertainties.

Usually, a hair replacement surgery is safe when it is conducted by a qualified, experienced physician. However, reactions to the surgery vary from different individuals. There are also varying response of the body to the healing process that’s why most of the time, the outcome becomes unpredictable.

The most common after-effect to surgery is infection. Likewise, excessive bleeding and/or wide scars, which are sometimes called “stretch-back” scars caused by tension, may result from some scalp-reduction procedures.

In transplant procedures, there is possibility that some of the grafts will not go out. Although normally, the hair contained within the plugs may fall out before establishing regrowth in its new location, the skin plug sometimes dies. If this happens, surgery must be repeated. In other cases, patients with plug grafts will have noticeable small bumps on the scalp at the transplant sites. Good thing, these areas can usually be hidden with surrounding hair.

When hair loss progresses after surgery, an unnatural, “patchy” look may result-especially if the newly-placed hair lies next to patches of hair that continue to thin out. If this happens, additional surgery may be required.

While these things happen after surgery, the experienced physician will usually discuss to the candidate these possible effects before the actual procedure is done. Likewise, some advice and recommendations may be given to ensure that these risks will be eliminated or minimized. In essence, after surgery, the patient is required to return for a followup check up. It is best to monitor the effect of the surgery for complete safety.
