Post Secondary Distance Learning Opportunities For Home Learners

With every year that passes, it seems that more and more families are electing to follow a home learning route. Even public school districts are coming onboard, by becoming distance learning providers, supplying curriculum and materials to families who choose to learn outside the traditional school setting. As well, there are countless private schools and programs that provide distance learning based on a variety of different styles and philosophies.

What many home learners neglect to consider are the vast array of distance learning providers that cater to post-secondary students. Secondary students, particularly those who have progressed to advanced studies, would be wise to consider continuing their studies from these institutions.

There are myriad of accredited and well recognized distance learning providers, whose credits are transferrable to colleges and universities. Taking these courses allows students to gain college credits while still in high school without having to attend a college. It is feasible for a senior who has completed their studies early to progress to and complete their freshman year at home.

For home learners, many of whom chose not to use a formal program of study, this can be beneficial when applying to colleges and universities that are seeking some formal records and transcripts. Students can have the freedom of a self-directed education through their secondary studies, which many colleges are more than open to, with the added benefit of getting a head start on their college program and having a few official records to underscore and complement their home learning curriculum vitae.

As well, studying higher level courses through distance learning allows for specific instruction in some areas such as high level mathematics and the sciences, where it can be challenging to continue to self teach or find specialists with the time to tutor. It can be advantageous for home learning families to explore the opportunities available to them.

As with any such program, self-discipline and time management are vital for success. Students may be surprised at the expectations placed upon them when studying post-secondary level classes, and may need to work to keep on top of their work, though conversely, for some students, some distance learning programs may feel too easy and not challenging enough. Sometimes it takes a while to find the best fit.
