Power Shortage Hurting Wb Jute Industry
“SME jute units in West Bengal are incurring huge losses in business as they are unable to execute their orders on time on account of acute power shortage problems,” said R Jhawar, Proprietor of Ramshankar Jute Trading Corporation, a small-scale jute supplier in Kolkata. The Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA), the representative body of jute mill owners, has already submitted a petition to Mrinal Banerjee, State Minister of Power, Sumantra Banerjee, MD of Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC), and Malay Kumar De, CMD of West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL), asking for additional power supply to all industrial units in the state. “If the government does not take prompt action with regard to improving the power supply problem in the state, then several SME jute mills in the region would head towards closure very soon,” said R Oswal, Proprietor of Balaji Jute Mills, a small-scale jute mill in Murshidabad, West Bengal. IJMA has also urged the government to implement a system of scheduled electric power cuts, rather than unscheduled cuts which leads to disruption in production. Jute mills in the state have requested the CESC and WBSEDC to increase their power-generation capacity.
