Practical Chinese Textbook Series Stresses Conversation And Culture, Not Rote Learning
Practical Chinese is a series of books written especially for kids who speak English as a primary language and are learning Chinese. Author Wendy Lin wrote this series at first for her English-speaking children to learn to speak, read and write Chinese. Therefore, the Practical Chinese focuses more on daily conversation and verb usage. In the traditional Chinese language learning style, there is more emphasis on learning Chinese through writing. Practicing with more conversations mean a child will use more senses to process the new language. A child can both say and hear what is to be expressed. As more senses are used to learn, there is higher chance of absorbing more. For non-Chinese speaking parents who worry how their child will be able to pick up the accurate tones to speak Chinese, Practical Chinese comes with an audio CD for each level that the child may use when studying with the textbook and workbook (each one sold separately). Practical Chinese uses a methodology that incorporates all facets of knowing Chinese. Besides vocabulary, it also includes lessons on culture and other facets of language. Little by little, students using Practical Chinese learn to write characters in the proper stroke order. Translating words are also part of the process of learning Chinese. As the student advances, Practical Chinese lessons focus on asking and answering questions in real life situations. Later on, entire phrases then sentences are translated. Students are expected to be able to make presentations in Chinese after studying the Practical Chinese series. Practical Chinese has 10 levels in all. The first two books in the series are Beginners 1 and 2 and are recommended for smaller children or total beginners. The rest of the books are regular Levels 1-8. Each Practical Chinese level has Simplified or Traditional Chinese textbook, workbook and audio CD. Furthermore, it will be seen that Practical Chinese Series is… well, practical as it practices students to speak the language. Thus, Practical Chinese came out with other products other than the textbooks, workbooks and CD that will encourage students to use their studied language more. Practical Chinese is proud to have come out with its own Game Set and Coloring Book (coloring book available in Simplified and Traditional Chinese). The Practical Chinese coloring book “Learning Chinese Coloring-Activity Book” is designed for smaller children. The Game Set, on the other hand, can be enjoyed by all students. It contains 10 games that will help children practice their Chinese. Some of the games included are Memory, Unscramble and Make your Own Sentences. Practical Chinese also has a product for teachers and parents to teach Chinese in a fun manner. The book “Games for Learning Chinese” (sold separately) is also included in the Practical Chinese Curriculum. This book will help teachers and parents make practice time for children fun and efficient through games. These games can be played indoors or outdoors. Practical Chinese has been widely used by schools and for individual study in the US, Canada, Australia, Guam, Hong Kong, China, Israel and other countries. Its curriculum is aligned with the ACTFL (Association Chinese Teachers Foreign Language). Besides writing, author Wendy Lin is currently tutoring individuals and adoptive families Chinese. She has taught Chinese in several schools, as well as design the Chinese curriculum for the Marlboro district.
