The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which collects accident statistics, released the following data in a 2005 study:
-In 2005, there were more than 4,500 motorcycle accident fatalities in the U.S.
-44 percent of these accidents were single-vehicle crashes, while the other 56 percent involved other motor vehicles.
-In two-vehicle crashes with motorcycles, motorcycle riders made up 98 percent of fatalities.
Since motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than other types of vehicles, both drivers and bikers should take added care to keep motorcyclists safe.

Preventing Motorcycle Accidents and Injuries

Motorcycle riders can take added precautions to keep themselves safe out on the road:
-Always wear a helmet. Helmet use dramatically reduces the risk of fatality or serious head trauma if an accident does occur.
-Follow all laws and traffic regulations. Avoid excessive speeds and careless behaviors that can cause accidents.
-Watch out for reckless drivers. Take extra precaution when crossing through intersections and never drive in a car's blind spot.
While the occupants of other vehicles are encased with a protective outer shell, motorcyclists are in direct contact with the elements and thus are at an increased risk of serious injury if an accident does occur. By taking a few extra precautionary measures, bikers can do their part to make sure that they and their passengers stay safe.
