Lights and Miniatures: The Awe Factor

You know when you are really serious about this hobby when you start looking at lighting. When you add lights to it you are dedicating a bit of time and energy, you are also stating that it will not be used for toddlers, but receives more of a collectible status. Lighting your kit can be a fun yet challenging time. And why shouldn't that challenge encourage us to try? When you break it down, lighting is simply connecting electricity through a wire and a plug. In fact with the instructions at hand you will be surprised at how easy it is. Sure you are going to make mistakes, but you will learn and it will get easier for you. We recommend getting a small electrical kit to start, they are simple to set up and get started with. Remember it is only hard or challenging if you make it out to be.

Designing the Outside of Your Dollhouse Kit

The outside of the dollhouse has as much do to with the appeal, if not more, than the inside design. The first thing that everybody looks at is the paint and the shingles. Three coats of high quality paint, recommended for dollhouses, is the minimum for dollhouse display. The shingles should be died and applied carefully using a ruler to assure that the lines are straight. There are many other ways to enjoy an attractive exterior; most of them are through accessories like dog houses, or gazebos. The exterior can even house subtle designs like a rock walkway, fountains, or flowers. And let us not forget the biggest advantage to designing the outside: the lights. Put some porch lights on, and if you have lit the inside it will make the glow through the windows appealing on the outside as well.

Floor Plan Design and Preparation

If you fail to plan you plan to fail. A plan of action is crucial because it will keep you on a track leading to success. With miniature design a plan of action will consist of a floor plan and budget. A floor plan can be as simple as a sketch that was drawn by hand or a print of a room that you would like to copy. In order to help you look for some room examples to start on the internet and in local stores. Make sure that you are taking notes of great rooms that you see. If you see something in your notes worthy of changing your plan, then go ahead and do it. Now that you are ready to buy, you will want to break out your budget to make sure that you don't overspend. Unfortunately for hobbyists miniatures can get a little expensive. In my opinion it is better to save up for a nice piece of furniture rather than going ahead with a cheap copy.

Size: Very Important in Design

When setting up your dollhouse and buying furniture you will need to remember the three sizing constraints. The first sizing element of miniatures is the scale, the second is the room dimensions, and third is sizing miniatures next to one another. First is the scale of furniture, make sure that your furniture is the right scale for your dollhouse. Meaning that if you have a half inch dollhouse that you need to purchase half inch dollhouse furniture. The second size element, sizing up the room, means that you are not getting furniture that will not fit in the room. The actual furniture dimensions should be located at the store or website that you bought it at, simply measure and compare. The last point is relative size; this means that within a room you can coordinate the pieces. Larger pieces will have more of a prominence so if you really want to make your china cabinet pop you shouldn’t make the dining room table so elaborate.
