Primer Type Of Social Media
Social media communities come in many flavors. Here's a quick intro. Social Networking Sites The most popular forms of social networking revolve around web sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. These are built for people to connect with others. Users join the community by creating user profiles that can include a bio, interests, multimedia, notes, and blogs. They can then use the site to find contacts, colleagues, friends, and family members, and list them within their profile as a friend, contact, or colleague. Some social networks like Facebook and MySpace focus on connecting friends and family, while work-based sites such as LinkedIn and host focus on professional information, host CV's and connect business colleagues. Blogging Blogs derive their name from weblogis. Blogs are frequently updated web sites showing updates newest first. These updates could be journal entries, articles, or just cool links to share with others. Some blogs have posts per day in the double figures, while some blogs may barely post weekly or less. Blogs are usually split into topical categories, allow visitorcomments, and offer content spreading through RSS. Even if you didn't realise it, if you have browsed the Internet in the last five years, you have most certainly stumbled on a blog. Blogs were previously used by individuals, or small groups, but successful blogs such as Mashable and Lifehacker have helped to push them into the mainstream. Some blogs claim to have over 5 million subscribers. By comparison, the New York Times newspaper only has a circulation of around one million. The lines between blogs as opposed to a magazine-style site are blurring. While blogging was generally considered to be more of a snippets style, some blogs are now publishing full-featured, feature-length articles. Microblogging Microblogs are the posting of short updates limited to very few characters. Updates can be sent via instant message, SMS text message, or on a web site to people who are following you. Microblogging services have only recently experienced widespread mass adoption. Twitter is currently the most popular microblogging service. Many larger social networking web sites, including Facebook and LinkedIn, also incorporate snapshot status updates, which are a kind of built-in microblog of its own. Microblogs can be incorporated into web sites and blogs by showing the latest entry or a number of most recent entries. Photo and Video Sharing Web sites allowing users to share photos and videos with families, friends, and the general public are quickly growing in popularity. YouTube has videos with audiences in the millions, even making their creators creators (in)famous. In the past, sharing media wasn't straightforward. Sites like YouTube became popular because they made it easy for anyone to upload and share content online. Flickr, one of the most popular photo-sharing web sites, has applications for adding photo's from mobile phones from almost anywhere. Users can capture any moment and instantly share it with anyone or everyone. Like a social networking site, users of YouTube and Flickr can befriend other users of the service. Bookmarks It's hard to remember that interesting web site you found last week that you've only bookmarked on the office computer. Social bookmarking web sites try to solve that problem by providing a hosted and accessible home for your bookmarks. Also, bookmarks shared with others and tagged, make it easier to to find similar web sites or search for atopic. Delicious provides such a service. Social News Social news web sites such as Digg centralise links to news stories posted on web sites accross the web. Stories are submitted, rated, or voted on by the community, with the most popular featured on the site's home pages and and category lists.Blog aggregators, such as Technorati or Alltop, which categorize and display content from entire blogs instead of single posts are another type of social news site. Podcasts A podcast is an audio or video recording shared online. Users subscribe to a feed of your programs, automatically grabbing new episodes on their release. a digital video camera or simple audio recording software is all you need to start making podcasts. Video and audio can also be streamed live to the Internet via cell phones and webcams. Sites such as Ustream and Qik allow users to broadcast live from many different mobile phone models. Online Forums The good old online forum is one of the longest established forms of social media. People gather to have open discussions on niche topics. Online forums usually focus on specific topics like sports, parenting or health. (www.pr1media.com) Article Directory: http://www.articledashboard.com PR1 Media (www.pr1media.com) |
