Problem Children - What Are The Options ?

Let us look at the scenario where your child has been suspended from school or even expelled! Dealing with problem children in this situation is not easy at all. Here are some of the options you can consider when dealing with problem children in this situation.

In the UK now, the idea of keeping the expelled child or problem children at home and asking the parents to stay at home, and monitor the child's behavior is now gaining ground as a good idea. I do not think it is a good idea at all as the child will not behave in the same way at home. It is like putting a parent and a child into a vacuum! Secondly, the parent will not be able to dedicate that much time to observing their child's behavior, as they will probably have to work.

Here are some more practical ideas. As a parent, you will have to find out just what the problem is at school. Is your child misbehaving because of a difficult relationship with the teacher or is the problem with his peers? There could also be problems with seating arrangements and you might like to ask about that. The problem may be connected with acting out or just plain bad behavior which is disturbing the class and the teacher.

My cousin at school was a troublemaker and I remember my aunt and uncle defending him to the hilt while they criticized the headmaster in front of their child. Parents need to keep an open mind on their child's behavior and need to find out exactly where the problem lies, rather than taking it out on the school, or even the teacher. This is looking at the problem in an upside down sort of way, as changing child behavior is the real challenge but many parents refuse to face that, either from laziness or ignorance.

Even if there are problems or disagreements with the teacher's style, these must never be discussed in the presence of your child. A much better solution is to work together with the teacher so that certain behavior plans to be implemented at home and at school can be agreed on and finalized. Then, it is much easier to have ONE standard of behavior at home and at school.

There are other options you might like to consider for child behavior problems. Most experts now believe that parenting skills which can be learnt through behavior modification techniques can be effectively and successfully learnt by parents. In a child behavior program, you can learn a whole set of strategies for dealing with verbal abuse, aggression, homework issues, curfews and a whole range of other problems connected with child behavior.
