Problems You Could Have Replacing A Polar Heart Rate Monitor Battery?

Heart rate monitors are a very important tool in the gym bag of many athletes like cyclists, runners or tri-athletes no matter what level they are at. Training by heart rate has been around for a while and it allows people to train better and ensure that their workouts are done at an intensity that is neither too hard nor too easy. But like all other makes and models the Polar heart rate monitor battery dies and then what do you do?

HRMs are made to provide info about your heart rate as you work out. Most models utilize a chest strap which includes a transmitter along with a wristwatch that contains the receiver and a display to view the data. They can provide a wealth of feedback about your workouts that can help you achieve your goals.

Both the transmitter and the receiver require batteries to function and though the battery life is really pretty good the problem comes when the batteries go dead. How do you replace them?

Unfortunately with some makes this is not an easy question to answer as the solution varies on the make and model you have. Some manufacturers recommend you take their units to an authorized service center to have their units serviced. Sometimes this is to preserve the warranty and sometimes to ensure it remains water proof.

The transmitter and its battery on some makes or models are molded right into the strap. Thus when the battery goes dead, the transmitter is of no use and can only be thrown away. While with other models you can't replace the battery yourself as it has to be done by an authorized service depot. Though some people view this as a minor hassle, others see it as a major aggravation. Some manufacturers like Omron and Timex though make their units so the users can replace the batteries. I personally like Polar but this is a point at which they missed the mark.

There are a couple of possible problems you can run into when you try to replace the batteries yourself though you certainly can accomplish the task.

One problem is getting the battery in right. This really isn’t a problem if you’re carefully and watch what you are doing and carefully put thing back as they were.

Also most makes use a special gasket that creates a water tight seal for the case. So one of the problems people have when replacing the batteries is getting the gasket replaced properly and not replacing it properly can result in water damage. Again this little rubber gasket fits into a small slot around the perimeter and with being careful is really easy to get back in right.

Some people get desperate when they have a strap that has a fused in transmitter. They try cutting open the strap around the circuit board then replacing the battery in the transmitter. I do not recommend you try this.

If you do have to replace your strap with a new one you need to make sure that you “sync” it with the watch unit. You will need to refer to your user’s manual for the syncing instructions as the process varies depending on the unit you have. It will not work if it is not synchronized.

Heart rate monitors are used by people as a fitness aid at all levels of fitness and athletic endeavors. I personally use a polar unit and even though there can be some minor problems I won’t hesitate to buy another one any time I need to.
