Problems and Advantages to Self Publish Your Book

Over the years, there have been many problems with self-publishing. In fact, that's why many people had to give up their dreams of creating a self-published book. However, recently there have been many advancements that have made self-publishing a lot more convenient and advantageous. So, lets take a look at the old problems and new advantages of the self-published book.

Pre-Publication Costs:

It used to be a real problem for many people to pay to self-publish books. After all, there were printing costs. Most printing companies also insisted on printing a certain minimum number of copies. That meant that new authors were forced to pay out of their own pockets to have initial copies, which could number in the hundreds, or even thousands, printed up.

An even bigger problem with those pre-publication costs was that there were no guarantees. A person might sell one copy of a book or they might sell a hundred. So, authors never knew if they'd make their initial investment money back. That was enough to stop a lot of budding authors in their tracks.

Publishing Houses:

Those that couldn't afford to have a self-published book had two alternatives. The first is that they could just drop the whole thing. The second is that they could seek help from one of the major publishing houses.

Publishing houses, however, were very selective about which manuscripts they chose to endorse. It could take months or even years for a person's manuscript to get accepted by one. So, that caused even more people to give up on the idea of becoming authors.

The Modern Changes:

The modern changes to self-publishing have fixed many of those problems. For one thing, digital printing means lower cost. In fact, most authors don't have to pay any up front costs at all anymore. Their books can be published cheaply and they get a portion of each sale.

Another major change that is thanks to the Internet and cheaper costs of digital publishing is the Print On Demand feature. The idea of POD is that the supply will always meet the demand. Extra copies of each book don't need to be made because copies are printed after people order and pay for them. They can be printed after every X number of orders or even individually, as each copy is ordered.

The third major change is versatility. There are many things that people can now self-publish conveniently int heir own home. For instance, there are software packages that make it simple for anyone to self-publisht heir own photo books and share them with family members. So, it's no wonder that self-publication has really taken off since the Internet became more popular.
