Product Review: Htc Evo 3d—opinions Split

The reviews are out for HTC’s newest Smartphone, the EVO 3D. The HTC EVO 3D is the successor to Sprint’s wildly popular HTC EVO 4G Smartphone. I have perused numerous reviews and find the opinions seem to be pretty evenly split. Most reviewers liked the speed of the processor, but are split on the glasses-free 3D features. The games seem to be fun, but you can’t turn your head suddenly or you lose perspective. Many liked the 3D camera feature, but just as many felt that the 3D features were mostly just a glamorous gimmick. Since cell phone service providers are limited to which phones they can offer, the EVO 3D is only offered by Sprint. If you’re a loyal Sprint customer, you may want to experience the EVO 3D for yourself. If you are thinking of switching to Sprint just so you can get the EVO 3D, you might want to wait to see what other options HTC is offering to AT&T and Verizon.

Mixed reviews don’t necessarily make the HTC EVO 3D a bad phone. As I read through the reviews, there were definitely pros and cons to HTC’s latest Smartphone. The EVO 3D runs on the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC Sense 3.0, and has a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, dual 5MP rear cameras for 3D and a 1.3 MP front facing camera. The EVO 3D has a 4.3-inch qHD display, the same size as the EVO 4G but with a higher resolution, and the display can handle glasses-free 3D content. All-in-all, the specs alone are impressive. I’m not so sure I am interested in having 3D on my phone, but since I am a Verizon customer, I will have to wait for a different phone anyway.

The Pros:

* It runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

* It has the Snapdragon dual core processor.

* The new Sense 3.0 is pretty fancy, and probably makes buying an HTC worth it.

* The dual cameras are great and give you video conferencing capabilities.

* It runs on Sprint’s 4G network.

The Cons:

* The 3D software is still pretty limited.

* The homescreen carousel is a little too easy to trigger.

* It has dual 5 MP sensors vs. the 8 MP sensors found on most of the newest Smartphones.

* The 3D camera feature needs improvement.

* The battery life isn’t up to the challenge, but then most Smartphone batteries are lacking. (I would suggest getting a spare battery or an extended life battery.)

So, will you wait or buy the HTC EVO 3D now? There are now more 3D Smartphones out on the market. Besides the HTC EVO 3D, there are the LG Thrill, the Sharp Galapagos 3D, the Motorola MT810, Samsung’s W960, Hitachi’s WOO Ketai H001 3D, and the Sharp Aquos Phone SH-12C. All have pros and cons, but I would wait until later in the year to see what else is offered.
