Once you understand that anything and everything can change, be created, or designed in your dollhouse it opens up tons of potential. For instance the amount of detail that is available to you is mesmerizing. One example is fabrics within a dollhouse. Bedrooms are a fabulous place to start. You can coordinate the sheets, mattresses, curtains, pillows, and even a throw blanket. Modern, Victorian, Classical - The Standards of Design

Creating style can be more intense than what you have previously thought, what era will your dollhouse resemble?Each piece of furniture will belong to a certain room, but you must also realize that each room should connect with each other. This is creating a styling theme. When you get right down to it, you might have your choice set out for you as there are really only three major era styles in dollhouse furniture. The first is Victorian, a design established in the mid 1800’s that will give you old home design from cooking stoves to classic armoires. The second is Modern, which brings in all of the technology from our day from TV’s, stainless steel refrigerators, and off the wall furniture designs. The last is the traditional or classical style which will give you a standard look – Nothing to fancy or distinct of any era, but useful in filling your dollhouse.

An Addition that can make a Big Difference

Everyone likes to tweak there dollhouses from time to time. The last dollhouse that I was making I discovered a great addition that really made my interior stand out. I simply created a floor board to use for the trim around the floor of the dollhouse. Floor Trim is not a new creation, but what I found is instead of buying it, to use a very thin balsa wood found in most craft stores. I applied this balsa wood to the floor of each of my walls to form a great outline along the bottom. What I found is that they covered up the tiny bumps between the walls and the flooring. The wallpaper walls were also trimmed and I was really happy to see that it prevented fraying due to covering the edges. This discovery truly was a small one, but I believe that it really added to my dollhouse.

Rearranging Furniture? Try Some New Strategies

Because a doll's furniture is very light you can easily found the perfect arrangement in a matter of seconds. A placement strategy is simply a way of trying things differently to give you the arrangement you want. The two most common layout designs is the triangle and the square. In the triangle layout you will have three major pieces of furniture and place them at the ends of an imaginary triangle, each of the pieces are turned in and the look is very symmetrical. The square design is used with either three or four types of big pieces of furniture, with four pieces the furniture is places in the corner of an imaginary square. You can also use the square approach with five pieces; just place the extra piece in the middle. The square and triangle layouts are the most common, but do try many other shapes like an ellipsis, octagon, or even a bell curve.
