Profits From Publishing
Any publisher will tell you about how tough the business of publishing really is. Publishers shift through dozens of submissions from hopeful authors. They pick through mediocre after mediocre manuscript until they think they have found real gems. Once they have found something that seems to have great potential, they try to determine how marketable it is. Because even if a manuscript gets published, there is little guarantee that readers will buy the book. A publishing company can't afford to run a business of lost profits, otherwise they will never survive. They always have to consider how marketable a piece of work is, or else they will certainly lose out to the competition. This is precisely why most publishers will request certain genres or only look through the works that fit certain criteria for sales. Like mystery novel or romance novels. Because then, they know who the target audience is and they know there are readers who will buy these books. Market-driven publishing also means that nothing new or innovative ever gets published. There are many people who feel that writing a book is just the kind of thing you do to try to impress the kids. While it may work in some cases, you should at least have something to show for it and not just talk about. If however you actually ever get around to writing a manuscript thick enough to produce a book, the next step would be to find a publisher. But just keep in mind that publishers can be vicious on whose work they choose to publish. There is a chance that your work will remain unpublished for several years or even forever if you do not stick behind your work. This is because anybody can think of a good book idea, but only a few can actually write the book that begun from the seed of a good book idea. Even those who have never written a serious piece of work can create something that sprang from a simple idea. After the main work has been done, it's now time to find a publisher to accept your book, which is ususally a greater task than the writing. It's important to remember that publishers have made many monumental mistakes in the past, especially on which manuscripts to publish or reject. The most profitable book series in history was rejected dozens of times before the author found a publisher. The work came from the famous author was J.K. Rowling and the book was “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone”. So if your work isn't accepted immediately by some publishers, keep that fact in mind. There could be many publishers who reject your hard work, but all you need is that one publisher to see your work’s potential.
