Proper Landscaping Will Add To The Efficiency Of Energy In Your Home

Many people do not think of landscaping when it comes to energy conservation and energy efficiency. The fact is there are some techniques and steps you can take that will not only add value to your home but help reduce costs when it comes to your home’s energy resources. Here a few things that you can implement today that are low cost if you are willing to put a little seat equity into it.

Nothing makes your electric bill fly through the roof than the dog days of summer and running the air conditioner. It is even worse if your entire house is exposed to direct sunlight. Just like it would happen to you if you sat out in the sun too long, your house bakes and overheats when the sun is pounding on it all day. Planting trees to shade your home will reduce cooling costs. A typical tree that you purchase at any home or garden center can be as high as the windows at the end of year one and at your roof tops in 5 to 10. Of course you can purchase larger trees to accelerate this process, however they are more expensive.

Insulating your home properly is always very important. Besides your home’s normal insulation on the inside you can also insulate your home on the outside by planting shrubs, vines and bushes. According the EPA, you will want to “plant them so there will be a one foot gap of space between full grown plants and your home’s walls.”

To help against the cold winter months the EPA recommends that you plant low-lying trees and shrubbery that is dense on the north and northeast sides of your home to protect it against the winter’s wind chill.

So there you go. Three ways you can use landscaping to improve your home’s energy efficiency and reduce your home energy costs, so that you are cooler in the summer months, warmer in the winter months, and keep that savings to take a nice vacation one day.
