Bacillary dysentery is a water-borne disease and is caused by the Shigella bacteria. The bacteria enter the body through contaminated food or water. The bacteria produce toxins which attack the delicate lining of the intestine. It can cause ulcers in the intestine and also give rise to bloody diarrhea fever and colic pain. Contamination of water sources usually due to bad sanitary habits are the usual cause of bacillary dysentery. Bacillary dysentery is highly contagious and can be spread very easily by means of food or water. This means that waterborne–shigellosis can spread easily among family members, schools, infant care centers, nursing homes and other institution. Shigellosis can affect any age group but it is more commonly seen in children.
